Dear Friends of Lobo Tennis,

I am writing to invite you to participate in a new (and friendly) tennis concept at Lobo Tennis Club: Monday Night Lobo League. In years past, both men and women’s tennis programs have benefitted financially from court usage in the bubble on Monday nights, whether it was through court rentals or the men’s doubles league. However, the time has come to revamp what we do during those popular hours 1), to continue to support our D1 tennis teams and 2), to offer those who play during that time an experience that is both social and stimulating.

Four separate groups are invited to play in an 11-week round robin league, either as a doubles pairing or as a pod of 3. These different level groups are offered to provide a competitive environment for all, week in and week out.

Dates/groups are as follows:

Monday, October 7 through Monday, December 16, 2024

6 to 7.30 pm: Women’s 8.0 Doubles

7.30 to 9 pm: Women’s 7.0 Doubles

and

Monday December 30, 2024 through Monday, March 10, 2025

6 to 7.30 pm: Men’s Open Doubles

7.30 to 9 pm: Men’s 8.0 Doubles

The fees/session to participate in the league are:

Members: $180 per player (or $120 if part of a pod)

Non-members: $225 per player (or $150 if part of a pod)

New balls will be provided for all the matches.

Additional information:

-       Each session is limited to 12 teams (first come, first serve after date/time listed below).

-       Teams are comprised of 2 or 3 players.

-       Teams are required to find subs whenever needed.

-       Subs cannot exceed the max level of the league.

If you are interested and want to enter a team, please contact Vicky Maes at maesv@unm.edu

Entries for the October 7 through December 16 leagues will be accepted starting September 9, 2024 at noon. Entries for the December 30 through March 10 leagues will be accepted starting October 14, 2024 at noon.

Thank you, and hope to see you at the courts!

We are excited to start 2024 out with our new Senior Assistant Pro, Alex Mansfield. Alex has been a tennis pro in Albuquerque for the last 15 years. When it comes to teaching tennis, his top priority is getting people to either fall in love with the game for the first time or remember why they once did.  Alex is available for individual and group sessions for all ages and abilities. Read more about Alex and ways to work with him to improve your game below!

A Message from Alex:

Hello tennis community,

My name is Alex Mansfield and I'm incredibly grateful and excited to be joining Lobo Tennis Club as John Kowalski's Senior Assistant Pro.

I'm a lifelong New Mexican and have been a teaching pro here in Albuquerque for the past 15 years. I've spent the past 10 years at my childhood club, the Tennis Club of Albuquerque, where I've helped grow a number of the adult and junior programs on offer today.

Tennis has played a huge role in my life for over three decades now, and I feel so fortunate that I get the chance to share it with people on a daily basis. I don't expect everyone's experience with the game to be as formative as mine has been, but I'm hoping that I can nudge a fair few people gently toward the "love" side of what's very much a love/hate relationship!

Beginning in January, I'll be offering a variety of lesson options that I'll outline below, but would love to hear from you as well if there are particular clinics or lesson types that would interest you.

Once I get a feel for my schedule, I'll offer some recurrent weekly clinics, but in the interim, I encourage you to reach out to me if you're interested in any of the following -- if you can wrangle enough participants, I'm happy to work with you whenever our schedules align!

  • Private/semi-private lessons (1 or 2 players, $70/75 per hr)

  • Small group lessons (3-6 players, $25 per person per hr) - work on anything from stroke development to strategy, or simply play point-based games

  • Team practices (up to 12, $20 per person up to 6, $15 per person 6+) - for League teams wanting targeted practice and supervised point play

  • 3+me ($25 per person per hr) - doubles where the pro plays in as the fourth

  • LiveBall (4-6 players, $30-25 per 90 minutes) - fast-paced doubles point-play format with plenty of balls and plenty of running

  • Fitness clinics (4-8 players, $20 per hr) - intense, tennis-based fitness circuits and drills to work cardio, strength, core et al.

I'm looking forward to seeing you out on court come January, but I encourage you to please reach out to me with any questions or suggestions in the interim!
